A Party 30 Years In The Making

So the better half of the team that makes up Albatross & Ivy Creative is about to turn 30. On Saturday night we pulled off the impossible and surprised Megan with a birthday party. It is hard to keep anything from this girl, so planning a party without her knowing was next to impossible. She is as curious as a cat dressed as a detective.

Planning and throwing parties is so much fun. Meg has always wanted a cocktail style party where everyone dresses up and acts schnazzy. We had the party at Wine Steals in Hillcrest and it was the perfect venue! The wine selection is amazing and the food is fantastic. I decided to add a fun element to the night by creating a photobooth, complete with crafted cardboard costumes. It was a hit. Check out some of our favorite photos from the night.

Shepard Fairey Inspires

I remember the first time ever seeing a bit of creative work from Shepard Fairey. I was snowboarding in Tahoe in the mid 90's and saw the Andre The Giant Has a Posse sticker on a chairlift pole. I recall being confused and intrigued all at the same time. What did it mean? Was it a gang? Did he really weigh 520 lbs? Since that day I have come to know what an amazing street artist Shepard Fairey really is.

Recently we have seen more and more Shepard Fairey artwork popping up in the coolest places around town. The Urban Outfitters in Hillcrest is graced with his work right now. The Hillcrest Mural was commissioned by MCASD and is a part of the Viva La Revolución: A Dialogue With The Urban Landscape exhibit.

This amazing wall piece was put up on the corner of 30th & Ivy in South Park. We stopped by and saw Shepard doing his thing in person. Check out the Burmese Monk Mural.

We recently bought this print that was made for the movie 180° South. This poster is at the forefront of a grassroots effort to stop the construction of five hydroelectric dams in Patagonia. It is signed by both Shepard as well as Patagonia owner and environmentalist, Yvon Chouinard.

This limited edition Woody Guthrie print was put on sale 6 days ago and sold out immediately. Total bummer, because we need to have it. Woody Guthrie is a legend as was the hero of Bob Dylan. We'll will be keeping our eyes out for this print.

Not only is the creative mastermind behind Obey Giant incredibly talented, but we can definitely get behind the philanthropic messages he illustrates through his work. We're excited to see the art of Shepard Fairy's lending some creativity to the city streets of San Diego!

We Love Well Planned Grassroots Campaigns

We also love 80's video games, so this is really a win-win. With Comic-Con just a few weeks away, Downtown San Diego is getting a new look. The iconic Space Invaders alien has been popping up on buildings around the Gaslamp area.

French street artist Invader has installed 21 aliens that are all a part of “The Space Invader Walk,” a self-guided tour through downtown SD. Space Invader enthusiasts will find all 21 pieces of art and discover that the path they walk sketches out an 11-block-wide shape of a Space Invader, with each city block representing a pixel in the giant alien.

This project is part of the Museum of Contemporary Art's upcoming exhibition Viva la Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape. The show, including works from renowned street artists Banksy and Shepard Fairey, opens July 18th. Thanks Wired.
